A walk around Oxford’s many pubs is a walk through history. Visit the smallest, the largest, the oldest or the one with the lowest ceiling. Explore old ale houses with names and histories that link them to monarchies, rebellions, kingmakers and crusaders; to writers, poets, actors, filmmakers and musicians; to fishing, bear fighting and horse racing; to moneylenders, magistrates, SP bookies and women of ill repute. Today they’re stylish establishments offering beer, food and a meeting place for locals and tourists alike.
